As the title states, this slideshow will demonstrate how to make the traditional Pulaar dish of Hakko, which is a meal of couscous and bean sauce served frequently in the villages of southern Mauritania.

Thanks for the slideshow, Katie. It looks like so much work goes into making this simple dish! How much time does it take? It was interesting to see the process and a few pics of you and your host family (it is the host family where you and mike were staying, right?).

Technically...no, this isn't our host family, but they are quickly becoming our "adopted" host family. We don't actually have a "host family" here in NDB since we have a place of our own. However, Mariam is my closest Mauritanian friend and her family has been incredibly welcoming and generous to us. Oh...and they started making the meal at 3 pm and ended up eating it around 8 pm, so you're right...like most Mauritanian meals, it took a great deal of work and preparation.

Okay, I thought these were older photos from your earlier days with the host family. Wow - five hours to prepare this meal!

Katie, as I was doing my laundry yesterday, I thought about you and also my mother. Mostly my mother as I was there at the time and I have not been with you in Mauritania. As I operated my Automatic Washer, I thought back to when I was small and my mother did laundry each week for 8 children and my dad and her self, using a wringer washer operated by a gas engine that made so much noise the neighbors a mile away could tell it was laundry day at the "Marions". Also all the water had to be hand pumped and carried from a well about 50 yards from the house, heated on the stove which at the time was probably a wood stove. So goes my story and it made me really appreciate my washer and also you Katie as I know you are dealing with a lot of hard ships you never dealt with before such as taking 5 hours to prepare a meal Mauritanian style. Just wanted to share this with your post to the blog. Love Your mother-in-law Karen
